 Lejla Batina: Lejla Batina is a professor in embedded systems security at the Radboud University in Nijmegen, the Netherlands. She received her Ph.D. from KU Leuven, Belgium (2005) and before that she worked as a cryptographer for SafeNet B.V. in the Netherlands (2001 - 2003). She has coauthored more than 150 refereed articles on various topics in applied cryptography and embedded system security. Her current research interests include physical attacks on cryptographic implementations and the impact of AI on hardware security. She is a senior member of IEEE and an Editorial board member of top journals in security, such as IEEE Transactions on Information Forensics and Security and ACM Transactions on Embedded Computing Systems. She was program co-chair of CHES 2014, ACM WiSec 2021, Africacrypt 2022, SPACE 2020-2022 and she co-organized (as general chair) IACR flagship conferences like EUROCRYPT and Real-world crypto symposium (RWC). Her research group at Radboud consists of 10+ researchers and 11 Ph.D. students have so far graduated under her supervision.Side-channel analysis of cryptographic implementations: Lessons learned and future directions

Abstract: Side-channel analysis has changed the field of cryptography and it became the most common cause of real-world security applications failing today. It has also shaped the way crypto competitions are run such as recently finished NIST Post-quantum and Lightweight crypto standardization processes. In this talk we give an overview of side-channel attacks on implementations of cryptography and countermeasures. We discuss the ways in which Machine learning and AI changed the side-channel analysis landscape and attackers' capabilities in particular. We survey several examples of AI assisting with leakage evaluation and discuss the impact of it on the field and security evaluations in particular. Finally, we also describe the way side-channel analysis threatens AI implementations e.g. neural nets architectures that are commonly used in practice. In the end, we identify some avenues for future research.

 Krzysztof Pietrzak: Krzysztof Pietrzak received his masters and PhD from ETH Zurich, then did postdocs at ENS Paris and CWI Amsterdam. Since 2011 he heads the cryptography group at the Institute of Science and Technology Austria (ISTA). He is interested in theoretical and applied aspects of cryptography, including pseudorandomness, lower bounds, leakage-resilience, memory-hard functions, crypto for light-weight devices, sustainable blockchains (chia.net) and group messaging. He is the recipient of an ERC starting and an ERC consolidator grant and three Eurocrypt best paper awards.Protocols and Lower Bounds for Group Messaging

Abstract: Messaging apps like Signal or Whatsapp use the "double ratchet" protocol which not only provides end-to-end encryption, but also advanced security notions including forward secrecy (if a key is compromised, past messages remain secure) and post compromise security (compromised keys heal as the communication moves on). It's a challenge to construct protocols that efficiently scale to larger groups without giving up on the strong security properties from the two party case. The most promising candidates are TreeKEM (proposed by the MLS IETF working group) and its variants. In this talk I will survey some of those variants (tainted TreeKEM, CoCoA and DeCAF) that achieve better security and efficiency and also recent lower bounds which prove that these protocols are in some sense optimal.

 Arne Winterhof: Arne Winterhof received the Ph.D. degree in mathematics in 1996 from the Technical University of Braunschweig. In 2001 he received the postdoctoral lecture qualification (Habilitation) from the University of Vienna. He awarded the Hlawka Prize in 2004 and the Advancement Award of the Austrian Mathematical Society in 2010. From 1999 to 2002 he worked as research scientist at the Institute of Discrete Mathematics of the Austrian Academy of Sciences in Vienna and from 2002 to 2003 at Temasek Laboratories at the National University of Singapore. Since 2003 he has been with the Johann Radon Institute for Computational and Applied Mathematics of the Austrian Academy of Sciences in Linz. He is on the editorial boards for Designs, Codes and Cryptography (DCC), Cryptography and Communications: Discrete Structures, Boolean Functions and Sequences (CCDS), Finite Fields and Their Applications (FFA), Journal of Uniform Distribution Theory (UDT) and Advances in Mathematics of Communications (AMC). He was co-editor of Sequences and Their Applications SETA 2008 and 2014. He has published more than 150 papers in international refereed journals and conferences in finite fields and their applications, in particular, analysis of pseudorandom sequences. Abstract: In this survey talk we summarize properties of pseudorandomness and non-randomness of some number-theoretic sequences and present results on their behavior under the following measures of pseudorandomness: balance, linear complexity, correlation measure of order k, expansion complexity and 2-adic complexity. The number-theoretic sequences are the Legendre sequence and the two-prime generator, the Thue-Morse sequence and its sub-sequence along squares, and the prime omega sequences for integers and polynomials.
